Who is Erika Lust ?

Erika Lust (real name Erika Hallqvist) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1977. Director, screenwriter and producer, she is known as one of the pioneers of feminist porn.

At Lund University in Sweden, she studied political science, specializing in human rights and feminism. In 2000, after graduating, she moved to Barcelona, a city she would never leave, and where she married Pablo Dobner, who is now her partner. Erika Lust began her career in feminist pornography in 2004 with the short film ‘The Good Girl,’ which humorously follows the sexual adventures of a young Spanish woman.

She then founded her own production company, Lust Films, specializing in feminist pornography, with a majority of female directors.

In 2007, her film Five Hot Stories For Her (five short films about female pleasure) won several international awards (FICEB Award, Feminist Porn Award, Venus-Eroticline-Award). It was the start of her renowned career.

erika lust biography

Today, Erika Lust has built a veritable adult industry empire. Her name is the first that springs to mind when one thinks of feminist and/or ethical porn. Both a successful businesswoman and a talented director, Erika has revolutionized the pornography industry, putting women’s pleasure at the center of the narrative.

Feminist Porn according to Erika

Feminist Porn has as many definitions as there are humans on earth. For Erika, it’s about redefining female pleasure in pornography. Women are no longer portrayed as mere sexual objects, existing solely to fulfill men’s desires within the confines of the male gaze. Instead, their pleasure takes center stage in the narrative. It’s a genuine exchange where desires, boundaries, and even the most extreme fantasies are considered by all parties involved. Feminist pornography does not equate to “soft” sexuality; on the contrary, it encompasses all practices, whether hardcore or not, as long as they are consented to by everyone involved. For Erika, feminist porn also entails greater female representation both behind and in front of the camera. That’s why 90% of her team are women.

Finally, Erika Lust opposes and challenges mainstream pornography, which unfortunately remains prevalent. This industry often involves poorly paid performers (and other employees), unclear consent practices, and unhealthy working conditions. In short, for Erika, feminist porn must also be ethical porn. It’s crucial to her to provide a safe and healthy workspace where everyone is paid fairly. To achieve this, she chooses to charge for access to her pornography, aiming to offer the best working conditions and ensure that consumers support certain values. However, she also acknowledges that it’s important for women not to feel guilty or be too hard on themselves if they choose to consume productions that don’t align with their preferences.
