Erika Lust : Biography & Films to Watch

Who is Erika Lust?

Erika Lust (Erika Hallqvist by her real name) was born in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1977. Director, screenwriter and producer, she is known as one of the pioneers of feminist porn (like Paulita Pappel or Olympe de G).

At Lund University in Sweden, she studied political sciences, specializing in human rights and feminism. In 2000, after graduating, she moved to Barcelona. A city she would never leave, and where she married Pablo Dobner, who is now her business partner.
Erika Lust began her career in feminist pornography in 2004 with the short film The Good Girl, where you can follow, with humor, the sexual adventures of a young Spanish woman.

She then founded her production company: Lust Films, specialized in feminist pornography, where you mostly find female directors.

In 2007, her film Five Hot Stories For Her (five short films about women’s pleasure) was awarded several international prizes (FICEB Award, Feminist Porn Award, Venus-Eroticline-Award). This was the beginning of the great career we know her for.

Today, Erika Lust has built a true empire in the adult industry. Her name is the first that comes to mind when talking about feminist and/or ethical porn. Both a successful businesswoman and a talented director, Erika revolutionized the pornography industry by placing women’s pleasure at the center of the narrative.

Feminist Porn according to Erika

Feminist Porn according to Erika

Feminist porn has as many definitions as there are humans on earth. For Erika, it’s about reconsidering female pleasure in pornography. Women are no longer this sexual object only present to satisfy men’s needs, locked in the male gaze. Her pleasure is at the center of the scenario. It’s a sincere exchange where desires, limits, but also the most extreme fantasies are considered by both parties. Feminist pornography doesn’t mean “soft” sexuality, on the contrary, it just requires that all practices (hardcore or not) be consented to by everyone.

For Erika, feminist porn also means more female presence behind and in front of the camera. That’s why her team is 90% women.

Finally, Erika Lust opposes and fights mainstream pornography’s drifts, which are unfortunately too numerous. Underpaid performers (and other employees), sometimes unclear consent, unhealthy work environment… In short, feminist porn can only also be ethical porn. It’s very important for Erika to offer a healthy, safe workspace, where everyone is fairly paid. To achieve this, it means choosing to pay to watch pornography, in order to offer the best working conditions and ensure consumers a respect for certain values. Even though she doesn’t want women to feel guilty and be too hard on themselves if they watch productions that don’t suit them.
